The Idaho High School Activities Association selects a number of schools every year as “Schools of Excellence”, which is a year-long, voluntary programs in which schools earn points based on their student-athletes’ performance in the classroom, at the athletic venue, in activities’ competitions and in the area of citizenship and sportsmanship. Exemplary Achievement Status is awarded to schools of each classification that finish second and third in the final point compilation. Twin Falls High School has earned the honor of being a 2010-2011 Exemplary Achievement winner. Twin Falls placed 2^nd in the 4A division. Congratulations to Twin Fall High School and their athletes.

Oregon Trail Students Pay It Forward

Oregon Trail created for the first time this year an activity called “Pay It Forward”. The “Pay It Forward” activity allows students to give up their a.m. and p.m. recess for two weeks to either help out in a classroom or help organize the school. The response from the students involved, younger students and the faculty was very positive. Oregon Trail plans to continue this new activity and plans to start the activity earlier next school year to allow for more students to have the opportunity to participate. Way to go Oregon Trail students for giving back to your school.

TFHS Athlete Wins Gatorade Player Award

Twin Falls High Schools’ Cy Sneed, a senior, has been awarded the prestigious Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year for the state of Idaho. Gatorade gives this award to one selected athlete in every state in the nation that demonstrates academic success, athletic achievement and outstanding character in his school and community. Local FFA Team Headed to National Convention

The Twin Falls High School FFA Dairy Judging team will be headed to the National FFA Convention in October after taking first at the state career development events in Moscow against 23 other teams. Abby Biedenbach, Hannah Biedenbach, Mark Dolecheck, and Shantel Peck will be representing Idaho in the Dairy Cattle evaluation category. Abby Biedenbach had the top score in her event overall. Others receiving honors were Lauren Casdorph who placed second in Dairy Cattle Handlers event and the Twin Falls team placed seventh in the Food Science event. Congratulations to Blaine and his students for their success and good luck at state.

Students Earn Over $1.7M in Scholarships

Physicals for Student Athletes

St. Luke’s has scheduled three evenings for students needing physicals. This is for TFHS, CRHS, RSMS, and OLMS students planning to participate in athletics for the 2011-2012 school year. The dates are Tuesday, May 10th, Wednesday, May 11th, and Thursday, May 12th from 6:00-8:30 each night at St. Luke's Downtown Campus, 660 Shoshone St. East. The physicals are $20.00 each and will cover participation for the 2011-2012 school year!!!

Superintendent Wins $600 for OLMS Relay For Life

Cedar Lanes hosted a bowling challenge that paired local celebrities and heroes on two person teams competing for money to be donated to local charities. The Bowling Challenge was held on Wednesday, April 20 from 4:30-6:30pm. Superintendent Wiley Dobbs and Perrine Principal Bill Brulotte participated in the challenge. Dobbs and his teammate, Bob Templeman, won the challenge and $600 for O’Leary Middle School’s Relay for Life Fundraiser. The challenge was presented by Kids Bowl Free, a program promoting free summer bowling for kids! Children 15 and under can sign up to get two free games of bowling EVERY DAY for the whole summer at Cedar Lanes!

Danny Marona Performing Arts Scholarship Finals

Morningside Inventors Win Big at State

Over 60 Morningside students were involved in the 2011 State of Idaho Invention Convention. Starting in October of 2010, and working hard through March 2011, young inventors from Morningside Elementary set out to tackle the challenge of identifying a problem and creating an original solution in the form of an invention.

Building onto last year’s motto of “It’s Too Early to Quit”, we added “Inventing: It’s Too Fun to Stop!” By putting the scientific method into practice, students worked for months and each built a model, kept a detailed scientific journal, and designed elaborate backdrops to present their project.

In January, their work was put on display at Morningside for parents and the community to view. Five judges had the difficult job of choosing 15 projects to be sent to the regional contest held in Boise. After the selections were made, those projects were taken to the engineering building on the campus of Boise State in February. Of the 15 projects taken, all of our inventors received awards; seven projects placed and five projects were spotlighted for the State Championship contest.

At State, all of our Morningside Inventors earned awards. In addition to this, Kyler Western from Mrs. Beck's 2nd grade class placed third for the state of Idaho in the adaptations category with his popular project "The Shoe-inator". Sara Mandura and Anders Wondrick in Mrs. Rush's fifth grade class teamed-up with their project "The Shoe Sizer 2000" to also take home a third place in the Jules Verne category. Standing at the top of the mountain of inventors, Holden Davis and his “Trash-bot” from Mrs. Speicher's 2nd grade class came back with the title of "Best of Category for Working Models” for grades 1st-8th. Our very own Holden Davis won the entire category!

Our Morningside students have proven to be creative problem-solvers that are capable of great things. Public Meeting to Discuss the Supplemental Levy Election

The Twin Falls School District Board of Trustees formed a community Budget Advisory Committee in October of last year. This committee met a number of times to discuss and review the TFSD budget and needs. The committee determined that the TFSD should pursue a Supplemental Levy for $7.5 million ($3.75 each year) in order to maintain services and operations over the next two years. The TFSD Board of Trustees accepted the recommendation of the Budget Advisory Committee and the levy election will be held on March 8, 2011.

The Twin Falls School District will hold a public meeting to discuss the Supplemental Levy Election on Thursday, February 24th at 7:30 p.m. at the O’Leary Middle School Auditorium, 2350 Elizabeth Blvd. District Officials and members from the community Budget Advisory Committee will present information in regards to the Supplemental Levy election.

Glanbia Surprises MVHS Students

Glanbia Foods played the role of Santa Claus on December 17th as they surprised each Magic Valley High School student with a block of cheese and $20 bill. To show their appreciation, the Magic Valley High School culinary arts program cooked steak and baked potatoes for Glanbia representatives. Budget Q and A

First, please know that the Twin Falls School District Board of Trustees is making every effort to do that which is least disruptive to our students and to take care of our employees as best we can during these tough times. Second, we would like to clear up any misunderstandings or misinformation about the changes we are making due to a decline in funding. While we have made every effort to keep patrons and employees informed of the budget situation in newsletters, meetings, etc., it seems there are a few who have received inaccurate information.

Throughout the budget planning process it was our goal to constrict rather than cut programs or personnel. We wanted to preserve academic programs, extra-curricular activities, and jobs. Beginning in January, Superintendent Dobbs offered over 30 presentations to faculty, staff, community groups, parents and students regarding the funding emergency. During, and following, these presentations, the district collected ideas on ways to best respond to the state revenue reductions. Each idea was analyzed and it was determined that no matter what, a salary reduction would need to be a significant part of the plan. The Twin Falls Education Association and the district looked at the options of adopting the state salary schedule or furloughing days. Together they decided that furloughing days was the better avenue to take. The district also made reductions in other areas such as travel, supplies, computer purchases and personnel through attrition. In order to help clear up any remaining confusion, the following are some answers to questions we have received regarding the budget shortfall:

Why did the TFSD decide to go with furlough days rather than moving to the state salary schedule?

Had the district opted to move to the State Salary Schedule, the maximum reduction to teachers’ annual salaries would have been $8,800. With the furlough option, the maximum reduction to teachers’ annual salaries will be $3,723. In addition, we felt that it was unprofessional to ask teachers to work the same number of days for less pay. It is our goal to reinstate the furlough days, where practicable, as sufficient funds are realized by the district to allow for additions.

Is the Twin Falls School District reducing teacher salaries more than other districts across the state?

The salary reductions our teachers are taking this year are equal to or less than the total cuts many teachers have taken in other districts across the state over a two-year period. The reduction to TFSD teachers’ salaries through furlough days may be larger than some districts this year, but this is due to the fact that many districts made cuts to or froze staff salaries last year. Last year, the TFSD did not qualify to declare a financial emergency and was required to give raises in experience and education as per Idaho Law.

Is the Twin Falls School District making reductions because of costs associated with CRHS?

No. Due to the state budget shortfall, the TFSD will be operating with nearly $3.3 million less for the 2010-11 school year. This $3.3 million cut must come from the general fund. No money out of the general fund has been spent to pay for building costs associated with CRHS.

Are the salary reductions due to having to staff CRHS?

No. The State Department of Education funds the Twin Falls School District for the exact number of teachers we currently employ.

What is an Emergency Levy and was it considered when making reductions?

An Emergency Levy is a levy allowed by state law based on student growth. It requires only board approval. The Twin Falls School District has qualified for and received an Emergency Levy four of the last five years. It is anticipated that the district will qualify for the levy again this coming school year and the anticipated amount has been figured into the budget.

What is a “Carryover” and why is it important?

The carryover is general fund money that is not committed at the end of a budget year. It is important to sustain a carryover because it acts as a savings account and allows the district to have cash flow. It keeps the district from having to borrow money throughout the year and pay that money back including interest. At the beginning of the 2008-09 school year our carryover was $3.2 million or approximately one month’s worth of operating costs. At the end of the 2010-11 school year, the carryover is anticipated to drop to $1.6 million or approximately two weeks operating costs.

Why aren’t administrators’ salaries being reduced as much as the teachers’?

Administrators are furloughing the same number of days as teachers. Like teachers, their daily rates will stay intact. The resulting percentage cut from the annual salary for teachers is higher because it is based on employees’ daily rates and teachers work fewer days than administrators. It is important to remember as times improve and the district is able to add days back to the calendar, teachers will receive a greater percentage increase to their salary than the administrators will receive. We felt it was important to maintain employees’ daily rates as reducing daily rates would significantly impact employees’ retirement funds. We also opted to reduce some administrator positions through attrition thereby reducing the total amount spent by the district on administration by nearly ten percent.

Did the district consider a Supplemental Levy?

The district looked at the possibility of asking the community to support a Supplemental Levy for the 2010-11 school year, but a number of community and staff members indicated that because many patrons have lost their jobs or endured their own salary reductions, the district should not place the additional tax burden on the community without a comprehensive examination. However, a committee consisting of school administrators, board representatives, educators and members of the public will meet to review and analyze whether a supplemental levy will be proposed for election for patrons of the Twin Falls School District # 411 for the 2011-12 school year.

Why did the district hold a meeting on Memorial Day?

Since we opted to participate in the statewide financial emergency, we were held to a very tight timeline. The district wanted to allow for as much time as possible for an agreement to be made through the negotiations process. Memorial Day was the last possible day to hold the meeting without disrupting the tight timeline. This meeting was not mandatory for teachers. Further, if teachers were unable to attend, they had the option of submitting their input via letter for up to three days following the meeting.

ACT Exam Offered at CRHS

What Is the ACT Exam?

The ACT, or American College Testing, is a standardized collegiate examination, similar to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). In use since 1959, it is commonly used as an indicator of academic aptitude and readiness to enter college. Although the ACT is not as well-known as the SAT, it is almost as widespread; as of 2008, nearly all four-year colleges and universities in the United States accept the ACT, although every school factors the results into admission decisions differently.

The test itself consists of four subject multiple-choice examinations; the exams cover English, mathematics, science and reading. A fifth exam, an essay writing test, was added in 2005, though not all schools require the essay portion of the test. Questions on the ACT are based on testing standards developed by national governing organizations such as the American Educational Research Foundation, as well as national and state standards for education, such as those established per the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Textbook reviews and national surveys of teachers and other educators are also used in determining exam content.

Like the SAT, the ACT is given only at set time periods during the year, generally four to six times per year, depending on the state where the testing takes place. Testing must be scheduled in advance, and is only available on certain Saturdays. However, students with religious prohibitions against Saturday events can apply to take the examination on Sunday. Accommodations can also be made for students with disabilities. The amount of time allotted for the standard exam is roughly 3.5 hours, which generally includes two 15-minute breaks. Students that take the ACT Plus Writing exam, which includes the essay writing portion, are allotted just over four hours for testing. Students who take the ACT can send their score reports to up to four different colleges or universities.

The Twin Falls School District will hold a public meeting to discuss budget cuts on Monday, April 5 from 7-9 p.m. at the Canyon Ridge High School Auditorium, 300 N College Rd. The district is expecting to receive $3.57 million less in state funding for the 2010-2011 school year.

Superintendent Wiley J. Dobbs will make a presentation regarding the district’s existing conditions, the 2010-2011 budget cuts and possible ways the district can meet the reduction in funding. There will be time for those in attendance to ask questions, give ideas and make comments. It is the goal of the Twin Falls School District to make decisions that will be least disruptive to students and employees.

TFSD Receives $100,000 From Idaho Power

Idaho Power presented the Twin Falls School District with a $100,000.00 check for incorporating energy efficient features into the construction of Canyon Ridge High School. The Twin Falls School District worked closely with Idaho Power to determine the best measures they could take to ensure savings, such as:

· Daylight photo controls
· Occupancy sensors
· Efficient A/C units
· Reflective roof treatments
· Energy management control
· Demand controlled ventilation

Idaho Power estimates that the energy saving upgrades will reduce the Twin Falls School District energy costs by about $42,710 in electric bills per year. This equates to an approximate savings of 854,199 kilowatt-hours per year, which is enough electricity to power 65 average-sized Idaho homes for one year.

These measures qualified the Twin Falls School District for incentives from Idaho Power’s Building Efficiency Program, an incentive program for new construction and major renovations that is designed to encourage energy efficient design and installation by offering cash incentives.

Idaho Power officials stated that the $100,000.00 check represents a down-payment towards the savings the district will see in electric bills every month, and a sizable “Thank You” from Idaho Power for their energy saving efforts.

Superintendent Dobbs thanked Idaho Power and mentioned that the Twin Falls School District is very appreciative of the collaborative relationship they share with Idaho Power, the $100,000.00 check, and the long term saving the district will reap because of the energy efficient measures taken during the construction of the new buildings in our district.

The Twin Falls School District will also receive $1,635.00 for the Harrison multi-purpose room and $3,035 for the Morningside multi-purpose room.

The Danny Marona Performing Arts Scholarship Regional Competition was held last night at the Roper Auditorium. CONGRATULATIONS to Tess Gregg with her performance of See, I'm Smiling from The Last Five Years. Tess won 1st place and a $1500 scholarship. The 2nd place winner, Andrew Bortz, performed two compositions of his own, So Close, and I'll Be There and won a $1000 scholarship. Tyler Millican was the 3rd place winner. She performed Astonishing from Little Women and won a $500 scholarship. Tyler and Andrew attend Twin Falls High School and Tess attends CSI. TFSD Community Partner in Education Award

Each year at graduation, the Twin Falls School District Board of Trustees honors a community business or service agency with the Twin Falls School District Community Partner in Education Award. This year the award was presented to the Twin Falls Education Foundation for their support of Twin Falls School District students, staff and schools.

The Twin Falls Education Foundation was established in 1991 in conjunction with the Twin Falls High School Class of 1971 20-year reunion. Since that time, the Foundation has supported TFSD schools, students and staff with funding to help develop and maintain programs. For example, the Education Foundation has funded an annual grant of $1000 per school, music and agriculture student scholarships, classroom supply funding for each elementary teacher, new pianos and cellos at our schools, conference funding for the speech and debate students, and heart monitors for “all” students during health class.

Superintendent of Schools Wiley Dobbs stated, “While there are many in the community who contribute to public education, our partnership with the Education Foundation has truly enriched the educational experiences of our staff and students.” Superintendent Dobbs presented a plaque to Kathy MacMillan, President of the Twin Falls Education Foundation, for their dedication to and partnership with the Twin Falls School District.

Linda Watkins Named Education Foundation Director

Linda Watkins has been named as the new Twin Falls Education Foundation Director. Linda has lived in Twin Falls for 21 years, moving here from Missoula, Montana where she was an elementary school teacher. She graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Speech Communications and Elementary Education. Her husband, Mitch, and she have owned and operated Watkins Distributing since 1988. Linda has been a substitute teacher and also worked in advertising with Watkins Distributing while volunteering in area schools. She has served on the Library Foundation Board, Co-Chaired the TFSD Long Range Planning Committee and currently sits on the First Federal Bank Foundation Board. The Twin Falls School District looks forward to working with Linda and the Education Foundation.

Harrison and Morningside Multi-Purpose Rooms Complete

The Harrison and Morningside Elementary Multi-Purpose Rooms have been completed and turned over to the Twin Falls School District. Swine Flu Information

Dear Parent or Guardian,

This letter is for informational use only in response to the recent H1N1 virus (Swine Flu) news. An outbreak of the Swine Flu has caused the United States to issue a public health emergency. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 17,855 cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection with 45 fatalities. Although we have limited cases in Idaho, we are doing everything possible to protect the health of our students and prevent against the spread of swine flu.

Below is a list of routine public health recommendations for preventing the spread of the flu:

1.Keep your child home from school and contact a health physician if they are experiencing coughing and have a temperature of 100.5 or higher.

2. Instruct children to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around your child from getting sick.

3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

4. Wash hands frequently to protect against germs. Wash with soap and water, or clean with alcohol-based hand cleaner.

5. Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

6. Practice other good health habits. Keep yourself strong – and more resistant to disease – by getting plenty of sleep, staying physically active, managing stress, drinking plenty of fluids and eating nutritious food.

The Twin Falls School District is staying informed and monitoring the situation every day. You are also encouraged to check the CDC web site (http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ ) frequently for updates and revised recommendations.

Lincoln Elementary School Receives Honor

Lincoln Elementary School was honored at the national Title I Conference. Thirty-six states selected two schools from their state to be recognized as a National Title I Distinguished School for either exceptional growth or closing the achievement gap. Lincoln Elementary School was selected for exceptional growth. Lincoln received three awards from the Idaho State Board of Education for 22.18% point increase in Caucasian math, 27.39% point increase in special education reading, and 22.20% point increase in special education math.

The 72 schools selected from the nation were honored during the opening ceremonies of the Title I Conference, were invited to a luncheon and treated to dinner by the Idaho State Department of Education. Lincoln Elementary School received a banner and a certificate.

MVHS Culinary Places 3rd in "Death by Chocolate"

On December 5 and 6, the Magic Valley High School Main Street Players traveled to State Drama in Pocatello, Idaho. 38 schools competed, 14 of those in the “B” category, including MVHS (“B” teams are those from schools with less than 800 students). Catherine Howery, Dusti Morse, Alisha Neal, and Stephanie Galliher advanced to semi-finals in all of their events, and Alisha and Stephanie advanced to finals with their serious ensemble. The accumulation of points resulted in MVHS placing 3rd IN THE STATE as a team for “B” schools. Congratulations to the entire team for a fantastic competitive season! Toni was nominated by Principal Schroeder and was in competition with all other teacher nominees in the Magic Valley. Each Office Max store chooses one winner who receives over $1,000 worth of supplies from their store. Toni was nominated for her commitment to student achievement, especially her dedication to ensure that each and every child reach his/her set goals. AYP Schools

The Twin Falls school District made 95.7% of the adequate yearly progress (AYP) goals on the spring 2008 Idaho State Achievement Tests (ISAT). Perrine Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Sawtooth Elementary and Harrison Elementary are the four Twin Falls School District schools that met all 41 categories of AYP. Steps are currently being taken to address the areas that caused the remainder schools to be identified for improvement. An improvement plan will be developed in consultation with parents and the school staff, with technical assistance provided by the district office. Parents will have more opportunities to provide input through an expanded policy on parental involvement, which will further assist students to meet high academic standards. For those schools not making AYP, parents have the option to transfer their child to another school within the district that has not been identified for improvement. If parents have questions or concerns, they should contact the principal of their school.

Earning Gold Star status lets the world know that 90% or more students in one or more of the awarded teachers’ classes passed the Certification Tests this past year. It shows their capacity as teachers to help their students become certified financial literate. Haggan Receives Gold Medal at the FCCLA National Competition

Sheree Haggan competed at the FCCLA National Conference July 12-18th. She competed in a category called Illustrated Talk where the student has to find a concern that relates to Family and Consumer Sciences in our community. Sheree decided that her female peers were struggling with the confidence to say no to drugs, alcohol, sex or other peer pressures so she developed a speech to help build "A Woman's Worth." She wanted to let these young women know that they have self worth and that it is okay to say no to peer pressure. She gave this speech to classes at O'Leary and Robert Stuart Junior High. She also gave the speech to some of the Twin Falls High school girls. Sheree received a Gold Medal at the National Competitions.

Construction Update

How time flies! A little over two years ago on March 14, 2006, the district patrons approved the bond levy providing the necessary funds for current and future building projects. The following will provide insights into the progress that has occurred on these projects.

In 2007, Perrine and Morningside Elementary schools received site safety improvements which included additional parking in addition to loading and unloading zones located off the city street system. Lincoln Elementary also had an elevator installed allowing for all students and staff to have complete access to the second level of the building for educational activities. The cost for the three elementary school projects totaled $ 787,000.

At present there are four projects approved and in differing phases of construction. One year ago, on June 4, 2007, the construction site for Canyon Ridge High School was unveiled and the Ribbon Cutting ceremony was held on location. Construction began the weekend of July 4, 2007, after months of completing paperwork and obtaining approvals from all the agencies that have oversight for school building construction projects. Currently, we have 36 of 38 bid packages accepted and approved for Canyon Ridge High School and if you happen to pass through North College and Washington St, you will see the tremendous changes taking place. The school, which is approximately 220,000 square feet, is literally “growing out of the ground.” The building is on or a little ahead of schedule and is intended to be completed by May 2009. The Board of Trustees has approved expenditures totaling $47,435,467 and the final two bid packages for fencing and communications should cost an additional $1,000,000. To share a perspective with some facts: CRHS will use about 5,000 cubic yards of concrete in the building structure; 400,000 building blocks; 35 acres of grass, trees and shrubs and has a crew of approximately 120 people working on site any given day.

The Bickel Elementary School multi-purpose room is underway and should be completed by October 2008. The cost of the multi-purpose room and an elevator is $1,190,895. The Twin Falls High School football bleachers are being renovated by strengthening the under structure through welding additional supports to reinforce the seating area. In addition to the welding, new seats and foot boards, made of aluminum/metal, will be installed reducing maintenance costs and adding to the strength of the bleachers. The cost for this project is $461,349. The TFHS Chemistry Laboratory/classroom remodels will begin the day after the teacher’s finish their work and is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of school in the fall of 2008. The total budget for the remodel is $676,970 which includes fume hoods, air conditioning and equipment upgrades in the classrooms. Due to new regulations, the district must install water (fire) sprinklers in all renovated areas in the high school. The district is allowed to add the sprinklers as remodel projects are undertaken, thereby spreading costs over a longer period of time.

On May 8, bids were accepted for the Perrine Elementary multi-purpose room. The bids came in approximately $100,000 under the projected budget of $1,100,000. Construction will begin this summer and should be completed within approximately six months. The other elementary school multi-purpose rooms are in the design stage and further remodeling at TFHS, including locker rooms, restrooms and storage areas, are being planned for this fall and readied for the ninth graders to move to the building in the fall of 2009.

Regular meetings are held with the board of trustees, administration, architects and construction management representatives to review the progress of the building projects, determine priorities and make decisions about other projects that are being scheduled into the cycle for bidding and construction. Recently, the bids have been more favorable to the district and it is hoped that future projects will show a similar trend, in turn, helping the budget.

All projects promised in the bond campaign, not mentioned above, are in the planning process and will take approximately 2-3 years to complete. Some of the work is best done during the summer months to minimize the disruption to the educational process. Trustee Vera Redman has resigned from the Twin Falls School District Board of Trustees where she began serving in July, 1992. Superintendent Dr. Wiley Dobbs said, “For sixteen years Vera has served the students, staff, and the patrons of the Twin Falls School District #411 as a school board member. She has earned tremendous respect and admiration locally and across the state as a caring, effective school board trustee. I will deeply miss working with her.” Board Chair Bryan Matsuoka, also expressed his regret in losing Redman as a board member. “Vera has been my mentor throughout my service as a trustee and has been a model of wisdom rightly applied. Students, young and old, have greatly benefited from her volunteer service over the years. Redman’s dedication to education is an inspiration and yet another reason why Twin Falls is such a great place to live.” Vera will be missed and we wish her luck in all her new endeavors. Thank you Vera.

Rob Atkins served on the Twin Falls School District Board of Trustees from July 2005 to June 2008 and decided not to run for his Zone 5 position again. He was very active in helping update the TFSD policy manual as well as serving on the Saftey Committee and Quality Schools Committee. Child Nutrition Employee Appreciation Week

Child Nutrition Employee Appreciation Week (CNEAW) is fast approaching and what will you do to recognize your favorite child nutrition professionals?

Preparing healthy school meals, role modeling healthy eating habits and offering a friendly greeting are all in a day’s work for Idaho’s USDA child nutrition employees. The non-profit School Nutrition Association celebrates this professional commitment with Child Nutrition Employee Appreciation Week, May 5 – 9, 2008. The week is an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy school meals to more than 30 million children throughout the country each school day.

School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. They are trained sanitation and food safety experts and must manage financially self-sufficient programs. They use their creativity to make the cafeteria a fun and welcoming place all year long and perform their jobs each day because they care passionately about the children they serve.

The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day. Children depend upon school lunch for 1/3 to 1/2 of their daily nutritional intake. The U.S. Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, found that "school meals are healthy and children who eat school meals consume more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy items than children who do not eat school meals."

In a 2007 Trend study, school nutrition professionals provided specific examples of common improvements made to school meals this school year. Among the most popular responses were:

Reducing/limiting trans fat content (74%)
Limiting fat content of a la carte/vending items (73%)
Increasing availability of healthier beverages in vending machines (81%)
Increasing availability of fresh fruits/vegetables on a la carte lines and/or vending machines (69%)

Additionally, policy development has in areas such as wellness improved in nearly every area from past years, including the percentage of districts with a policy that limits the fat content of a la carte and/or vending items rising to 73% from 38% in 2004.

Twin Falls High School FCCLA students did very well at state competitions. Sheree Haggan placed Gold and will be going onto nationals in Orlando presenting an illustrated talk titled “A Woman’s Worth!” Erica Akridge placed Bronze and is the Alternate to go to Nationals in Career Investigations as a Chef. She also received a $750.00 scholarship to Johnson and Wales. LeRissa Crider and Toni Allred received Bronze in an Illustrated Talk for their piece on Recycling. Summer Calabro, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, also received an award as the Outstanding New Professional.

Paula Chapman: 2008-09 Educator of the Year recipient

Region IV is proud to present Paula Chapman as their 2008-2009 Educator of the Year recipient. Paula is a 7th grade Geography teacher at O’Leary Junior High School in Twin Falls. She has been very active in ensuring that the students and teachers of O’Leary continue to move forward in the pursuit of middle school greatness. O’Leary has been participating in Making Middle Grades Work (MMGW) and Paula is co-site coordinator. She and her partner are the link between O’Leary and MMGW, putting in countless hours planning, surveying, and presenting so that it is relevant to the needs of O’Leary. Even the little things don’t go unnoticed, such as providing treats at meetings. She is always appreciative of the time teachers have to take out of their classes to get MMGW things accomplished. When asked to describe Paula’s role in MMGW one teacher wrote, ―She is the knot that holds the focus teams together.‖

In addition, Paula works continuously to improve professionally by attending trainings, workshops, and conferences. She is always willing to share the great things she learns with her col-leagues. She has braved the duties of cheerleading advisor and started a ski club at O’Leary that has grown from barely filling one bus the first year, three busses and a waiting list this past winter. Raise the Roof for Morningside Inventors!

Seventeen students taking part at the regional event in Boise won awardsand prizes; of these students, seven placed in the top three for their invention category. Four Morningside Inventors moved on to compete at the state contest held at the Discovery Center of Idaho. These finalists included: ConnerGough, Ethan Hass, Kathryn Clark and Jade Winterholler. All finalists earned awards and prizes. Kathryn Clark from Mrs. Hawkin's third gradeclass placed in the top three at the state level with her eco-friendly invention entitled "The No Waste Paper Saver". Jade Winterholler from Mrs. Rush's fourth grade class earned the prestigious award of Best of Show with her game, "The Odd Ball". It's important to know that her invention was awarded first place above all others in her category for grades 1-8. The Times News featured Jade and her invention on Tuesday, March 11th in an article entitled "A Winning Invention". Students at Morningside are already gearing up with great problem solving ideas for next year's invention contest. Rebecca Duke - Awarded at City Council Meeting

Rebecca Duke (Twin Falls District employee) received the Jim A. Mildon Traffic Safety Award at the City Council meeting. She was recognized for her efforts during the past few years to improve safety for students specifically around Lincoln elementary, but creating awareness for all area school zones. She has been involved as a parent volunteer, an official school crossing guard, and as a parent/community volunteer on the Twin Falls Traffic Safety Commission (and for the past few months as an official member of the commission).

Bickel Elementary Featured in Commercial

KinderVision is a non profit community service organization whose primary purpose is to teach children and youth personal safety education via a unique, pro-active multimedia program aimed at preventing abduction and sexual exploitation.

They needed a classroom to film a part of their commercial so we had them, along with several children of TFSD staff members head down to Bickel Elementary. The kids had a great time, and it was alot of fun!

MVHS Takes 3rd Place for the Third annual Death by Chocolate

Recently, several students from Magic Valley High School spent dozens of man-hours preparing an entry for the third annual Death by Chocolate, sponsored by the Rotary Club. Their entry was a Pound Cake Sundae. First, orange flavored milk chocolate was spooned over the pound cake with a dollop of chocolate mint mousse topping the chocolate. A dark chocolate dipped maraschino cherry and shaved white chocolate topped off the mousse and a sprig of mint completed the ensemble. The students built 1000 of these creations and our Third Place award in the People’s Choice category is something every one at Magic Valley High School is very proud of. None more than teacher, Bob Withrow, who says, “These kids did an outstanding job! We’ll be back next year.”

School Counselors Celebrate During National School Counseling Week, Feb. 4–8, 2008

National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated from Feb. 4–8, 2007, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact that counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors who implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century. Dr. Dobbs, the Twin Falls Superintendent supports Feb. 4–8 as National School Counseling Week.

In a proclamation, Dr. Dobbs cited school counselors for being actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; for working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today's world; for focusing on positive ways to enhance students' social/personal, educational and career development; and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. Professional school counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master's degree in guidance and counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.

"Every day, school counselors work with school counseling programs that address the personal/social, academic and career needs of all students," said Eric Sparks, ASCA 2008–2009 president. "Their ultimate goal is to enable all students to achieve success in school and to become responsible and productive members of our society."

More than 21,000 school counselors nationwide will be participating in the week's celebration honoring school counseling.

Danny Marona Performing Arts Scholarship Competition - Twin Falls Sectional

The Twin Falls Sectional for the Danny Marona Performing Arts Scholarship Competition was held last night in the TFHS Roper Auditorium. The following students qualified for the finals which will be held on Saturday, April 5th, 2008 in the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium:

1st Place ($1500 scholarship) – Carson Howerton - Clogging (Twin Falls High School)
2nd Place – ($1000 scholarship) Danielle Essma – Dance (Twin Falls High School)
3rd Place – ($500 scholarship) Susan Dodds – Vocals (Twin Falls High School)

Nine students have qualified from three sectional competitions that have been held around southern Idaho and they will compete for a grand prize $5000 scholarship.
